The Witcher fans can now read Geralt of Rivia’s origin story in Crossroads of Ravens, the latest novel in Andrzej Sapkowski’s best-selling fantasy series. Originally published in Poland last November, the English translation released in the US on September 30. While Crossroads of Ravens is the ninth book in The Witcher series, you don’t need to be a longtime reader to understand what’s going on. The prequel takes place before the other Witcher novels and original short story collections, so it’s a suitable starting point for fans of the video game and TV adaptations, too.

That said, it’s not a bad time to pick up the previous eight books in the series. The Witcher Saga 5-Book Box Set is on sale for only $35 for Prime Big Deal Days (ends October 8). Paperback and hardcover editions of most of the books are included in Amazon’s Buy Two, Get One Free Book Sale (ends October 11).
The Witcher: Crossroads of Ravens (Prequel Novel) $24.50 (was $30)
Crossroads of Ravens is available in hardcover, ebook, and audiobook. The hardcover edition is on sale for $24.50 (was $30). If you prefer audiobooks, Crossroads of Ravens is available on Audible for $19.68 (was $22.49). Audible Premium Plus members can purchase it for $15.74 or with their monthly credit.
The 400-page prequel novel takes place shortly after Geralt graduates from Kaer Morhen. He doesn’t yet understand how the world views him, and he barely escapes death as a result. The story follows Geralt’s training with Preston Holt, the witcher who saved his life.
Crossroads of Ravens provides fans with Geralt’s origin story, which is an exciting development for a character who has become a fantasy fiction icon since his 1986 debut. Yes, Geralt has been around for nearly 40 years, but English translations of Sapkowski’s work didn’t appear until 2007, the same year CD Projekt Red released its first Witcher video game.

If you’re interested in reading the other books in The Witcher series, this box set is a one-stop shop and offers the best value. Released in 2020 by Gollancz, the UK publisher of the series, this box set is technically considered the international English edition. But unlike many UK imports, The Witcher 8-Book Box Set is sold and shipped directly from Amazon.
The collection includes all of the books you need to read to catch up with The Witcher Saga: the two short story collections, the five mainline novels, and the prequel novel Season of Storms. At $62.90, you’re getting each book for less than $8 each. All told, this box set is 3,002 pages, so it’ll keep fantasy readers busy for a while.
Each book has a different color cover with a variation of the Witcher series logo in the center. The display box matches this style, and you’ll see the Witcher logo emblem on the spines of each book, too.
If you want to check out the covers of these editions to compare to other options, take a look at this Amazon hub page we created. Amazon has some of the individual books in stock but not all of them. If you opt for these editions, you’ll want to go with the box set.

All five original novels are collected in this 2022 box set published by Orbit. It’s on sale for $35 (was $90) for Prime Big Deal Days. Since it only comes with the five main novels, you’ll need to purchase the story collections and Season of Storms separately to have a complete set.
In any case, this is a nice set of paperbacks with more subdued designs. The white covers are decorated with different symbols from the series. Just like with the Gollancz box set, the display box matches the covers.
Sapkowski’s pentalogy of mainline Witcher novels includes the following titles (in order):
Blood of ElvesThe Time of ContemptBaptism of FireThe Tower of SwallowsThe Lady of the Lake
These paperbacks are more compact than the editions found in the 8-Book Box Set, so the page counts are higher. Across the five books, this set is 2,208 pages, whereas the same five novels total 1,965 pages in the 8-Book Box Set.
See at Amazon The Witcher Stories Box Set (2 Books) $26.90 (was $35)
The Witcher Stories Box Set is meant to be paired with the novel collection. The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny are the first two books in the series. While you don’t necessarily need to read them before Crossroads of Ravens, it’s highly recommended that you read them before diving into Blood of Elves, the first mainline novel.
For comparison, The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny total 678 pages in the 8-Book Box Set, while this collection is 768 pages. Like the novels, the Orbit editions of the story collections are more compact than the Gollancz editions.
The Witcher Stories Box Set is on sale for $26.90 at Amazon, so you’d currently spend $62 combined on the two sets. That’s practically the same price as the Gollancz box set, but you’ll still need to buy Season of Storms separately.

The Orbit editions are the standard paperback editions sold in the US on Amazon, so all eight books listed below match the novel and short story sets. You can get the first book in the series for only $9.29, which is over 50% off its cover price.

After reading the two story collections and five mainline novels, you should check out Season of Storms. Published nearly 15 years after the mainline series came to a close, Season of Storms is set between a couple of stories in The Last Wish. Chronologically, it was the first novel in The Witcher timeline until Crossroads of Ravens rewound the clock even further back.

Like many books from big publishers, Crossroads of Ravens is only available in hardcover, ebook, and audiobook formats at this time. A paperback edition will likely arrive sometime next year, but if you’d like everything to match, the full series is still in print in hardcover. Both story collections received display-worthy Illustrated Editions a few years ago. You can get The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny Illustrated Editions for $23 each. The rest of the hardcover editions are around $20 (or less); five of the books, including The Last Wish Illustrated, are in the B2G1 sale.
The Illustrated Editions feature new dust jacket art, a quote from Geralt on the front cover, endpapers with character sketches, and eight illustrations by a group of talented artists.
Only the two story collections have received Illustrated Editions, but all of The Witcher novels received nice hardcover editions in 2022.
